How to Set up the Hb 201+ System

Setting up your HemoCue® Hb 201+ System is quick and straightforward. Follow these steps to get started:

Startup Process:

  1. Place the analyzer on a stable, horizontal surface.
  2. Connect the power adapter or insert four AA (1.5V) batteries.
  3. Pull the cuvette holder out to the loading position.
  4. Press the left button until all symbols appear on the display.
  5. The analyzer will perform a self-test. Once complete, three flashing dashes indicate it is ready for use.

Setting Up Audio & Date/Time:

  1. Enter setup mode by pressing both buttons until the QC symbol flashes.
  2. Press the right button until the audio symbol appears.
  3. Press the left button to activate or deactivate the sound.
  4. Continue pressing the right button until the time, year, and date settings appear.
  5. Adjust the hour using the left button, then press the right button to move to the next character.
  6. Repeat this process for the remaining date and time settings.
  7. Exit setup by pressing the right button until the three flashing dashes reappear.

How to Use the HemoCue® Hb 201+ System

Accurate capillary sampling is essential for obtaining reliable results with the HemoCue® Hb 201+ System. Follow these steps to ensure proper technique and measurement.

Preparation:

  • Ensure the cuvette holder is in the loading position (three flashing dashes).
  • Warm and relax the patient's hand.
  • Use the middle or ring finger (avoid rings).
  • Clean and dry the fingertip, then stimulate blood flow with light pressure.

Sample Collection:

  • Puncture the fingertip's side with a lancet.
  • Wipe away the first 2-3 drops, then collect the next.
  • Fill the microcuvette completely in one attempt–do not refill.
  • Wipe excess blood and check for bubbles. Discard if necessary.

Measurement:

  • Insert the filled microcuvette and push the holder to the measuring position.
  • View results while the holder remains in position.
  • Discard the microcuvette after use.
  • Access stored results via the scroll function.

Safety:

  • Wear gloves and handle blood samples carefully.
  • Follow local disposal guidelines.

HB 201+ Cleaning and Maintenance

Daily Cleaning of the Cuvette Holder:

  1. Turn Off the Analyzer – Press the power button to shut it down.
  2. Remove the Cuvette Holder – Pull it into the loading position and press the release mechanism.
  3. Clean the Inside Cover Glasses:
    • Insert a cleaning swab into the cuvette holder opening.
    • Move the swab gently side to side, then push it in and out.
    • If the swab gets dirty, use a fresh one to continue.

Cleaning the Exterior Surfaces:

  • Use a 20-70% alcohol solution or mild detergent to wipe down the cuvette holder and black housing components.

Reinstallation:

  • Allow 15 minutes for the cuvette holder to dry before reinstalling it.
