What are the Symptoms of Diabetes?

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), over 38 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes. That’s a staggering statistic. Even more staggering is how often symptoms can go unnoticed, which can lead to severe complications if left untreated. This is why early detection and management are key. Common diabetes symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Frequent thirst and/or feelings of hunger
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow-to-heal cuts and bruises
  • Sensations in the hands/feet, including tingling, pain or numbness

How is Diabetes Screened, Diagnosed & Managed?

Diabetes screening, diagnosis and management are essential components of comprehensive patient care, requiring careful and consistent approaches, as well as staying up to date with the latest protocols and guidelines. But it doesn’t end there. Having the right diabetes products and tools on hand can help prevent or delay complications, improve quality of life and ensure the best possible care for patients with diabetes.

Diabetes Screening

Early and accurate screening is vital for ensuring a timely intervention — especially when it comes to identifying patients who may have a higher risk of developing diabetes (e.g., family history of diabetes, obesity or other risk factors) or who may already have the condition but are not yet diagnosed. Common diabetes screening and monitoring methods include portable point-of-care devices such as urine and glycemic control analyzers that allow for on-the-spot testing and fast results.

Diabetes Diagnosis

If initial screening tests indicate the possibility of diabetes or prediabetes, further testing can help confirm a diagnosis and determine its type, including fasting blood glucose tests, oral glucose tolerance tests and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tests. According to the ADA, criteria for diabetes diagnosis are based on these specific test results, including an A1c of ≥ 6.5%, fasting blood glucose of ≥ 126 mg/dl and two-hour blood glucose levels of ≥ 200 mg/dl. It’s important to note that repeat testing may be necessary for borderline or inconclusive results.

Diabetes Management

For patients with a confirmed diagnosis, creating a personalized treatment plan is crucial for proper diabetes management. This entails making sure blood sugar levels are within target ranges using in-office and at-home blood glucose monitoring devices. There are two main types of blood glucose monitors: traditional blood glucose meters, which require a finger prick and a drop of blood on a test strip, and continuous glucose monitoring systems, which use a sensor inserted under the skin to measure blood sugar levels continuously.

What are the Benefits of Glucose Monitoring Devices at Point-of-Care Practices?

Glucose monitoring devices play a critical role in point-of-care practices, offering numerous benefits for both patients and clinicians, including:

  • Improved patient care: Glucose monitoring devices can help provide better care to patients by giving you real-time data on their blood sugar levels. This information can be used to adjust their treatment plans and ensure that they are getting the best possible care.
  • Reduced risk of complications: Glucose monitoring devices can help your patients reduce their risk of developing complications from diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke and blindness. By keeping their blood sugar levels under control, patients can stay healthy and avoid these serious complications.
  • Increased patient satisfaction: Glucose monitoring devices can help your patients feel more in control of their diabetes. By being able to track their blood sugar levels and make adjustments to their diet and lifestyle, patients can feel more confident about managing their condition.
